Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald has made a name for himself on Wall Street where he is a well-respected venture capitalist and hedge fund manager. He also has a long-lasting reputation in various fields of medicine and life-sciences research. In the arenas of healthcare and biotechnology, he is a leader, always at the forefront of R&D innovations. His singular experience combining the reaches of science with the power of finance has given Dr. Rosenwald the keen ability to create new avenues of research as well as find promising companies to invest in. His contributions are as countless as they are impacting. In the progress of his brilliant career, spanning almost two decades, Dr. Lindsay A. Rosenwald, has established and re-capitalized many public and private life-science and biotech companies.

After finishing up high school at Abington in 1973, Rosenwald began his college career at Pennsylvania State University. He graduated with a degree in Finance. He continued his education at the Temple University School of Medicine and completed his internship at Abington Medical Hospital. Thereafter, Rosenwald sustained his own private practice in medicine before moving on to other horizons. On Wall Street, he combined his two expert subjects, finance and medicine, and carving his way, he continued to walk the path to success.

Between 1994 and 2007, Rosenwald played the role of executive director for the Aries Funds. The Funds invested over $1 billion into healthcare. From 2002 to 2006, Rosenwald took another executive position, at the head of the Orion Fund which specifically invested in biotechnology initiatives, especially private investments in public equity.

Dr. Rosenwald established a non-profit organization called the Rosenwald Foundation. The organization is devoted to supporting many scientific, healthcare and educational companies.

Rosenwald’s approach to medicine in conjunction with finance has encouraged him on his unique path. His approach allows him to pursue new angles in medicine, biotechnology and life sciences.

Dr. Rosenwald is currently a director at the Republican Jewish Coalition and also serves as president of Paramount Group. The Paramount Group’s specialty is in investment banking, R&D, and equity management in life-sciences and biotechnology. One of Dr. Rosenwald’s most recent undertakings is the OpusPoint Partners, LLC which was created in 2009. The new company’s aim is to offer support to promising endeavors and new accomplishments in life-sciences and biotechnology. Notable achievements by Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald and his team include providing funding for numerous companies and drug candidates that show promise. Cougar Biotechnology Inc., in L.A., is one of these companies. Its primary mandate is fighting cancer and has recently produced a new drug for aggressive forms of prostate cancer called Abiraterone. In 2009, Johnson & Johnson gained possession of this auspicious company for $1 billion after negotiating with Dr. Rosenwald.

Kellie McLaughlin, the company’s spokesman, officially confirmed that the company had achieved progress, and he said that it took a real breakthrough to allow termination of an interim trial. Reportedly, more than 1,000 patients, some with severe metastasis expansion and several aggressive chemotherapy courses behind, took part in a research, known as COU-AA-301. The trial was originally invested by leading investment banks, including BioSciences owned by Lindsay Rosenwald, MD.

Another study – COU-AA-302 – aimed at researching the conditions of patients with metastatic prostate cancer, is currently under way. It is being applied to patients who have not received chemotherapeutic treatment courses thus far. Instead, they are getting intensive abiraterone-prednisone treatment as a part of the anti-cancer research.

In his report for BioWorld Today, Kimberly Lee, a Hunter Global Securities analyst, is optimistic about the abiraterone Phase III and MDV-3100, considering more than satisfactory Phase II results and the drugs’ similar effects. However, there is another promising, FDA-approved drug, which is actually a pioneering anti-cancer drug in the U.S. – Dendreon Corp.’s Provenge (sipuleucel-1). Provenge has proven effective against metastatic prostate cancer. For this reason, the discinception of abiraterone is not expected to take any significant effect on Provenge sales. However, though neither abiraterone nor MDV3100 can compete with Provenge, it might be possible to combine these drugs. This is where additional investments will be very handy and Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald and his analysts already think about the possible funding of a new research. In any event, it will take additional research to evaluate the degree of risk posed by the use of Provenge – a potent immune stimulant – in combination with immune suppressants, which are normally used along with abiraterone.

According to David Hung, President and Chief Executive Officer of Medivation, theoretically, abiraterone can be used along with Provenge. In his report, he noted several properties of MDV3100, which ensure improvement in many separate aspects, and an improvement in overall survival statistics among patients, who have received Provenge treatment.

In partnership with Astellas Pharma Inc., Medivation continues the research on MDV3100 and has yet three major trials to complete. Involved in the studies will be patients with early-stage prostate tumors.

Johnson & Johnson acquired Cougar Biotechnology Inc. in July 2009, and thus purchased abiraterone. Cougar, Los Angeles, previously funded by Lindsay Rosenwald’s investment bank, is now J&J’s subsidiary operating in conjunction with Ortho Biotech Oncology Research & Development – a J&J affiliate group.

Abiraterone acetate was licensed by Cougar in 2004 from BTG plc of the UK. This license agreement permits BTG to outline marketing strategies and entitles it to royalties, providing the product is properly formulated and is granted sale permission.

Some analysts, such as Piper Jaffray, who are well aware of BTG marketing dynamics, predict abiraterone sales to reach $1.2 billion by 2018.

Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald can also be known to start companies which were the inventories to the new drugs that help the human life a lot by curing the diseases that affect human body by making them weak. Cougar Biotechnology and Polarx Biopharmaceuticals are the two most popularly known companies under the foundation of Rosenwald. These two companies invented two new drugs in addition to the older ones. Though these drugs are being developed by the companies under Rosenwald’s guidance they are being allowed to enter the market after few medical tests. Drugs are the one which are known scientifically as life Savers.

All the inventions and developments of the drugs are done by highly qualified people related to various fields of Biotechnology under scientific research. It can be said that the team is grouped in accordance to the experts who are highly skilled with the practical and theoretical knowledge. The formulation of the drug and its manufacturing are done in a process like technology transfer, pharmacology and toxicology aspects of the drug, clinical development, regulatory, marketing, etc. The sacrifices of these team members are valued with the success selling of their products in the market.

It is Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald was a person by whom many new young Biotechnologists where inspired and laid new ways to further success. Rosenwald was the one with two invaluable features which were both as per financial and physician analysts.

Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald reputed himself as a corporate finance managing director for D.H. Blair & Company, in the year of 1988. This was a privately owned investment based business. There, he was the leader of a team of three physician-financiers that sought through the medical community for any new and profitable break-through that could make use of private investment. They located various schools of medicine, universities, hospitals, drug companies, study groups, and scientific firms. He has worked within the biotechnology and bioresearch disciplines. Dr. Rosenwald serves on the Columbia-Presbyterian Health Sciences Advisory Counsel and in the 2002 article edition of Genetic Engineering News he was ranked number one in the list of 100 Molecular Millionaires with a worth of $617,721,671. Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald operated on the Keryx Biopharmaceutical, Inc board of directors from 2002 to 2006. He quit in order to contribute additional time performing in the biotechnology market. Cougar Biotechnology, purchased by Johnson & Johnson in 2009, is another business that was first founded by Dr. Rosenwald and was originated completely on abiraterone acetate. Abiraterone Acetate, even though it had not yet attained phase III in clinical testing trials, was showing so much potential in the therapy and management for prostate cancer that Johnson & Johnson offered a short-term unification bid and procurement  for the Cougar Biotechnology corporation for $1 billion. Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald, apart from the scores of ventures which have imparted financing and resources to portfolio companies, has also began the Rosenwald Foundation. This is a nonprofit outfit that has been triumphant in offering millions of dollars in aid of many medical and scientific instruction institutions.

Should there be doubt of these unique traits, simply observe how the Rosenwalds parent.  Not content to simply support charities in an offhand or sidelined way, they have made it a part of their home life.  They hold various fund raisers and events centered around several organizations focusing on children with the aim of setting an example and providing a path for their children to follow.  In taking a look at the big-picture of various platforms they support, it becomes clear that the Rosenwalds are primarily and daily concerned with bettering the future of mankind.  Their efforts focus on programs and institutions concerned with societal improvement with a strong focus on education.  It’s increasingly uncommon to find individuals who not only simply donate to groups around the world, but also foster direct relationships with many individuals in need.

One does not need to search far to hear a story or two about Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald’s generosity.  An example would be an artist who, through sponsorship by Lindsay Rosenwald, has found their paintings to be hanging at the Institute’s headquarters.  Although spectacular in their own right, Lindsay Rosenwald bought the paintings solely to assist the painter.  The Rosenwalds were also honored at one of Sh’or Yoshuv’s previous events.  Reluctantly accepting the award, Lindsay Rosenwald stated, “I don’t like the lime light, but you know I will do what it takes to help you.”

The most telling account centers around a time when the Institute was in a very dire budget crisis.  Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald held a meeting in his home to resolve this issue.  Holding his silence through the entire meeting, Lindsay Rosenwald then approached the Rabbi and quietly assured him that he would front the shortfall in while.  He was sensitive to the fact that the room was full of people, and required no personal lauding for his generosity.

The Institute has proudly dedicated its campus atrium to Mr. David R. Rosenwald, Esquire, Lindsay Rosenwald’s late father.  As personal friends to Sh’or Yoshuv Institute, the Rosenwalds participate in the High Holy Days and a multitude of other spiritual services.  With a lasting and true commitment to their background, the Rosenwalds are irrevocably a part of the solid base that keep the Institute going as a unique hub of Jewish Education.

On the day of the interview, I was escorted into Lindsay Rosenwald’s office where I  sat office for about six hours:  talking occasionally, watching him take multiple calls at once, handle an endless round of visitors and calmly direct trades as he observed the market from any one of the four terminals showing market activity.   At the end of the day, he told me I was hired, and that I should come back in the morning to discuss details.

That evening, I remember calling my brother, Tom, and telling him about my day.   He shouted through the phone:  “You met with who?!    Do you have any idea who Lindsay Rosenwald is?!!!”

To say it was a meeting that changed my life forever, would at best be an understatement.

Lindsay gave me an opportunity that I would bet no one or at best very few would have given me.     I was media-regular, offering nutritional advice with no understanding whatsoever of the public markets.   Yet, still, Lindsay Rosenwald took a chance and introduced me  to the world of venture capital, merchant banking, public companies and financing.    It was a fascinating, hockey-stick learning experience that was intense, exciting, and life-changing.

Today, I am eternally grateful to Lindsay.   I consider him both a mentor and friend.  In a most informal way, he taught me valuable lessons that I cite regularly;

Pick a direction and stay focused.

Pioneers get the arrows, settlers get the land.

It is better to own 10% of the goldmine, than 100% of the shaft.

Don’t worry about idle gossip if its about you…it is really idol worship.

Lindsay is smart.    He works hard.   He is relentless.    I admire those traits.     But mostly, I will never forget that in so many ways the least likely candidate  for the job—he sees potential in things that most people simply miss.    He nurtures that potential.    He provides the environment to develop technologies and for people to think, grow, reach, expand, create and try.
Whether he is acknowledged and thanked for it, Lindsay single-handedly launched more successful careers than I can count.    We all had talent.    But whether we choose to admit it or not, we often come to our own greatness by the unselfish, helping hands of others.     To so many, Lindsay has been that helping hand:   to me starting an investor relations firm, to those who launched funds, and to the countless public companies that he created which in turn offered both jobs and opportunities.

Because of this, Lindsay Rosenwald was recognized in 2007 as JHP’s “Mentor of the Year.”  At an event held in June of that year, Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald accepted this honor along with other honorees as Andrew Schwartz, a graduate alumni honoree, as well as Mr. Jonathan Golub, a Strategist with Bear Stearns and prolific longtime supporter of JHP.

Since its founding in 1993, Jewish Heritage Programs has assisted over 65,000 Jewish college students across 10 campuses.  Members students organize their own events and meetings, developing long-standing ties to other students, professionals, and the Jewish community at large.  Involvement from individuals such as Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald has proven invaluable to JHP’s efforts to connect a myriad of Jewish students to their heritage and community.
